Hands-On Impressions: Crysis 3 Multiplayer

You are part of the CELL team who crash land near some ruins engulfed by the jungle. As we have come to expect from Crysis games, it looks great. The environment is rich with detail and really feels that you have stumbled on some ruins in the middle of the jungle. You almost forget you are trying to kill something, almost.

Before entering the fray you could chose your class of character: Assult, Sniper and Demolition (rifles, snipers, shotguns). For one of the rounds you would start as one of the Hunters.

The premise of the hunter mode is once you are killed by a Hunter, you become a Hunter. So nothing ground breaking here in terms of game mode. 10 CELL operatives pair off against two Hunters for five 2-minute rounds. CELL operatives get points for staying alive and killing hunters. Hunters get points for ‘converting’ CELL operatives. The winner is the player with most points.

What does make it interesting and force you into a team with a bunch of strangers, is that the Hunters are wearing a nanosuit which grants them permanent invisibility, they’re also equipped with a bow and arrow which, from what I could tell, was a one hit kill. I couldn’t help but think I was facing off against a Predator, had to resist shouting out a raft of Arnie lines.

As well as facing an invisible enemy, you also have limited ammo and each player is in possession of a single grenade that emits a field which reveals the Hunters in all their glory, this means sticking together is a good way to improve your chances.

The 2 minute round does add to the tension, not knowing where your enemy is and seeing team mates getting taken out, knowing they will be coming for you. It does feel like an achievement to reach the end of the round unscathed, although I wouldn’t know as the closest I got was 2 seconds before the end of the round until I was taken out. It also works for the Hunters, having 2 minutes to take out 10 enemies does blur the lines between being sneaky and frantically running about.

I will be interested to see how people feel about this game mode once it is unleashed into the world of online gaming, but from the experience I had with it, I think it will be entertaining to say the least.
